Dr Emma Meaburn gave a lecture on this topic as part of Birkbeck\u2019s School of Science \u2018Science Saturdays\u2019 series of free online talks. The talk is aimed at a general audience, is family friendly and available to watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1IfmF0aQ5s4\">here<\/a>&nbsp;on Birkbeck&#8217;s YouTube channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8216;Science Showcase&#8217; week <\/strong><br> A South London primary school ran a \u2018Science Showcase\u2019 week in May designed to introduce children to a variety of STEM careers. Dr Emma Meaburn spoke to ~150 year 6 pupils about her experiences as a scientist at Birkbeck, and led an interactive \u2018genetics of taste\u2019 experiment with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>UK trauma Council: Guide to Epigenetic Research <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is epigenetics and how is it related to trauma, health and wellbeing? In 2021, Dr Emma Meaburn talked to the UK Trauma Council about epigenetics, its role in linking the environment to health outcomes, and how practitioners should approach the research. The videos can be found <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7E7RHieSE8I\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uktraumacouncil.org\/research_practice\/epigenetics-and-mental-health-a-brief-guide-to-the-research\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Events to celebrate 100 year anniversary of Rosalind Franklin&#8217;s birth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2020, the GEL lab hosted a series of events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rosalind Franklin&#8217;s birth. Rosalind Franklin was a pioneer in the field of genetics and is an alumni of Birkbeck. See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gel.bbk.ac.uk\/2020-anniversary-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a> for more information on the events led by the GEL lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<strong>I&#8217;m a Scientist&#8221; activities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GEL lab is participating in the I&#8217;m a Scientist &#8216;Subject Knowledge Zone&#8217; during December. This activity is aimed at teachers, and is the form of a weekly online chat where you can log on and ask us about all things genetic. Please visit <a href=\"https:\/\/subject.imascientist.org.uk\/\">here<\/a> to register for the event <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some examples of past and ongoing activities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Science workshops&nbsp;in&nbsp;primary&nbsp;schools<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> The GEL lab team welcome opportunities to run science workshops in primary schools in London and the South East of England. For example we have recently run a workshop on \u2018Evolution and DNA\u2019 for Year 3 students, and helped Year 6 students extract their own DNA and build 3D models of a DNA helix.   If you are a teacher of KS2, please enquire about our availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ambassador&nbsp;for&nbsp;Women&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Future&nbsp;programme<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Angelica Ronald has been an ambassador for the Women of the Future programme since 2013. Each year she meets up to 100 female 6th form students to encourage them into STEM careers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TILE blog<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Meaburn discusses how DNA research can help us understanding individual differences in academic achievement in her blog post for the TEACHING INNOVATION &amp; LEARNING ENHANCEMENT network : <a href=\"https:\/\/learningspaces.dundee.ac.uk\/tile\/2018\/08\/20\/genes-environment-and-academic-achievement-an-interview-with-dr-emma-meaburn\/\">https:\/\/learningspaces.dundee.ac.uk\/tile\/2018\/08\/20\/genes-environment-and-academic-achievement-an-interview-with-dr-emma-meaburn\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>National Childbirth&nbsp;Trust<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GEL lab has contributed evidence-based writing for parents reading the National Childbirth Trust website, which receives  over 6 million visits each year. This is an ongoing effort that is focused on encouraging and supporting girls from under represented backgrounds succeed in STEM careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Career evenings&nbsp;in&nbsp;secondary&nbsp;schools<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Ronald speaks at career evenings for secondary school pupils about careers in STEM subjects<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I&#8217;m A Scientist!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Meaburn is a regular participant in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/imascientist.org.uk\/\">I\u2019m a scientist, get me out of here<\/a>\u2019, where she chats online to school students and teachers about all things genetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Birkbeck Science week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> As part of Birkbeck\u2019s Science Week, Dr Meaburn\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bbk.ac.uk\/bbkcomments\/2017\/04\/04\/a-day-in-the-life-of-dr-emma-meaburn\/\">blog post<\/a> provides a sneak peek into what the average day looks like when you are a working scientist:  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The GEL lab runs a variety of workshops and public engagement activities Science Saturdays talk Curious about how differences in our DNA impact how we think, feel and behave?
